Statistics committee: Ukraine harvests 28.7 million tonnes of grain as of September 1

Ukraine harvested 28.7 million tonnes of grain as of September 1, 2010, which was 21.4% down on 2009, the State Statistics Committee has reported.
According to the committee, grain and leguminous crops were harvested from 11.85 million hectares, with the average yield being 22.4 quintals per hectare. In particular, farmers harvested 17.5 million tonnes of wheat as of September 1, which was 19.2% less than last year, and 8.85 million tonnes of barley (28.2% less than in 2009).
At the same time, Ukraine harvested 580,000 tonnes of corn, or 26.5 times more than in 2009.
In addition, farmers harvested nearly 200,000 tonnes of sugar beet as of September 1, which was 12.8 times more than in 2009, and 350,000 tonnes of sunflower seeds (42 times more).
Farmers also harvested 1.48 million tonnes of rapeseed as of early September, which was 21.2% less than in 2009.
The Ukrainian Agriculture Ministry predicted a decline in grain harvest in 2010 to around 40 million tonnes.
