Ukraine's foreign trade 28.2% up in H1, 2010

Ukraine's foreign trade in January to June 2010 grew by 28.2% compared to 2009, according to a posting on the Economy Ministry's Web site.

"Taking into account data from the State Customs Service and the State Statistics Committee, foreign trade in goods and services in the first half of 2010, according to preliminary data, was worth $56 billion, and grew by 28.2% compared to the same period last year. The increase in exports in the period was 30.6%, and that of imports was 25.8%," the posting reads.

As reported, according to official forecasts, the growth of goods and services exports in 2010 is expected at 15.1%, and that of imports at 14.4%.

The Economy Ministry said that the surplus of foreign trade in the first half of 2010 was $425 million, while in the same period in 2009 its deficit was $491.9 million.

The official forecast for 2010 foresees a foreign trade deficit at a level of $1.903 billion.

According to the Economy Ministry, the export of goods and services in January to June 2010 was $28.2 billion, while goods exports grew by 33.5%, to $23.1 billion.

"An increase in goods exports was seen in all sectors of the economy in January to June 2010. Along with this, goods exports in the metallurgical sector grew by 1.4 times (by $2.6 billion) and that in the machine engineering complex by 1.4 times (by $1.1 billion)," reads the statement.

According to the Economy Ministry, the import of goods and services in the first half of 2010 was $27.8 billion, in particular, goods imports were $25.5 billion, rising by 29.2%. The largest share in the total imports falls on mineral products (35.5%), machine engineering (19.6%), the chemical sector (17.1%), the agricultural sector and the food industry (10.5%), and the metallurgical complex (6.5%).

"An increase in goods imports in the first half of 2010 was seen in all sectors of the economy and was mainly linked to the imports of products of the machinery engineering complex (31.5%), mineral products (29.8%), and chemicals (30.2%)," the posting reads.
